The Rifle Corps was first raised in 1800, and designed to have different tactics, training, and weaponry from the regular Army. In 1802 the Corps was brought into the line of the British Army as the 95th Regiment of Foot, the 95th Rifles. The Regiment would see action in Germany, South America, the Baltic, the Peninsular War, and at the Battle of Waterloo. 


In February 1816 it was re-named the Rifle Brigade, and served in the Crimea and the two World Wars. It 1958 the 1st Battalion was the last surviving battalion that traced its lineage back to the 95th. It's modern representative in the British Army is the 4th Battalion, The Rifles.
