Tradition of London 54mm Collectable Figure Set
The Duke of Wellington wearing his famous blue coat mounted on his horse Copenhagen at the Battle of Waterloo. Born on 1 May 1769, Arthur Wellesley went on to rise through the ranks of the British Army, cutting his teeth in the campaigns in the Netherlands, India, and most famously in the Peninsular War, the campaign in Spain and Portugal against Napoleonic France. He was granted his dukedom in 1814, following Napoleon's exile to the island of Elba.
While the Battle of Waterloo in 1815 remains Wellington's most famous victory, he himself believed that his victory at Assaye in Western India, in the Second Anglo-Maratha War, on 23 September 1803 was the best battle he ever fought.
After his military victories he turned to domestic politics, becoming Prime Minister of Great Britain twice. When he first took up office, he rode Copenhagen up Downing Street to No.10 to take his new position of leadership. He also remained Commander-in-Chief of the British Army until his death on 14 September 1852.
When Copenhagen died in 1836, at the somewhat remarkable age of 29, he was buried with full military honours.
